There is a particular moment when travelling to Epupa with children becomes worth the long drive.
You arrive at the Kunene, the Makalani palms are moving in the wind, and the sound of the falls is somewhere ahead of you. There is no shopping centre, no playground and very little in the way of organised entertainment.
The river is the entertainment.
For families who enjoy being outside, Epupa can be a very good place to slow down for a few days.
Yes, but it is not a resort-style family destination.
There are no amusement parks or endless activities designed specifically for children. What you do have is a river, rocks to climb over, birds to watch, walks to take and plenty of space to explore.
Younger children will need supervision around the river and waterfalls. The Kunene is not a swimming pool, and the rocks around Epupa can be uneven and slippery.
For older children, there is more freedom to explore. They can join family-friendly activities, learn about the plants and wildlife of the area, or simply spend some time outside without a screen in sight.

A few days beside the Kunene gives children the chance to do things that are increasingly difficult to find at home.
Depending on their age, they can walk along the river, look for birds, learn about the baobabs and Makalani palms, and explore the landscape around the falls.
Older children may enjoy a short hike or a rafting excursion, depending on the conditions and their age.
A visit to a local Himba community can also be an important part of the trip.
This is not a performance put on for tourists. Himba families live and work in this area. Children travelling with you can learn about another way of life by listening, asking respectful questions and seeing some of the everyday things that happen here.
We encourage families to talk to their children beforehand about taking photographs, asking permission and respecting people’s homes and privacy.
The basics are straightforward.
Bring a sun hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes and clothing that can cope with dust. A swimming costume is useful too.
If you are travelling with a baby or toddler, a baby carrier is much more practical than a stroller. There are plenty of rocks, sand and uneven ground around the lodge and along the river.
Bring reusable water bottles and enough of the familiar snacks your children like. Epupa is remote, and this is not the place to assume you can quickly pop out for the brand of crackers your three-year-old has suddenly decided are essential to life.
It is also sensible to bring any medicines your children regularly need, including something for an upset stomach.
The nearest larger town is Opuwo, roughly four hours away by road, so a little forward planning saves a lot of unnecessary driving.
The biggest mistake families can make in Namibia is trying to fit too much into one itinerary.
Epupa is remote. Getting here takes time, and that is part of the point.
If you arrive late in the afternoon, you do not need another activity squeezed into the schedule. Let the children get out of the vehicle. Let them run around. Watch the river. Have something to eat.
If you have enough time, stay for more than one night.
A slower itinerary also gives you room for the unexpected. A child finds an interesting beetle. Someone spots a kingfisher. You spend an hour beside the river doing absolutely nothing.
Those are often the bits they remember.
